Historien bakom WAR
Warhammer online: Age of Reckoning, eller WAR, har en ganska lång och invecklad historia bakom sig. Och nu pratar vi spelets utvecklingshistoria.
Efter lång planering av Warhammers skapare Games Workshop bestämde man sig för att utveckla ett onlinespel. Spelföretaget Climax Online valdes tillslut som utvecklare. Men i juni 2004, efter över 2 års utveckling hade kostnaderna skjutit i höjden och Games Workshop tog det smärtsamma beslutet att lägga ned projektet. Chefen för Games Workshop Robin Dews skrev följande inlägg på den officiella hemsidan:
“It is with a great deal of sadness that I…inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect. This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project.”
Trots detta beslut lades aldrig projektet helt ned hos Climax Online utan de fortsatte utvecklingen med egna pengar. Men bara knappt ett år senare gick man ut officiellt med att projektet lagts ner för gott då man inte hade kvar licensen att publicera spelet.
Ägare av licensen var Games Workshop och de blev nu kontaktade av Mythic Entertainment (numera EA Mythic). EA Mythic har utvecklat flertalet MMO-spel (Massively Multiplayer Online, bland annat det populära Dark Ages of Camelot. Mythic var nu intresserade av Warhammer licensen och att få starta upp spelprojektet från början. Man nådde snabbt en överenskommelse och den 18:e maj 2005 säkrade man ensamrätten till spelet.
Själva utvecklingen av Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning står som sagt numera EA Mythics för, men Games Workshop är till stor del involverad. Man ser till att spelet kommer följa den klassiska Warhammer storyn samt hjälper till att bygga ut storyn för att passa MMO-spel.
